The Delta

Parco del DeltaThe river Po, called the “gentle giant”, is the longest river in Italy. With its 650 km (about 400 miles), it runs through the Po Plain and flows into the Adriatic Sea, forming a delta and one of the largest wetlands in Europe and in the Mediterranean Sea.

It is situated exactly on the 45th parallel - the same one for Turin – and it stretches out to the sea like a triangle whose axis coincides with the main branch of Po di Venezia and whose sides run in the north along the Adige river and in the south along Po di Goro. The Po Delta is the most recent stretch of territory in Italy. As a matter of fact, the characteristic protrusion of the northern part of Italy has begun to take shape less than 400 years ago and is continuously evolving.

  • The Po Delta of Veneto stretches out for 786 square kilometers, out of which 160 consist of lagoons and the so-called characteristic "valli".
  • The Park protected area covers 120 square kilometers.
  • The Municipalities involved are 9, in the whole province of Rovigo. They are: Adria, Ariano nel Polesine, Corbola, Loreo, Papozze, Porto Tolle, Porto Viro, Rosolina, Taglio di Po.
  • The whole Delta area is populated by over 73 thousand inhabitants.

Experiencing the Delta

Vivere il DeltaThe Po Delta is a wonderful land, most of which is still unknown. It should be experienced by walking slowly across it, discovering the gentleness of its landscape, the warm and rough welcome of the fishing lodges, the emotion of the boat bridges, the mystery of the thick canebrakes, the wide horizons, the activity in the fishing lagoons and in the vegetable gardens, the charm of the mouth and of the sandbars, strips of very thin sand following the seashore.
